We humans are pretty judgy beings.
We’re quick to make assumptions about people and label them on first impressions, even write them off when they don’t fit our box of expectations.
Judgements come at a heavy cost though- they create resentment and misunderstandings in relationships.
Questions do the opposite- they invite curiosity and create space for learning and understanding someone better.
The benefits of asking questions extends beyond relationships, to the world of business.
Research finds a strong link between inquisitiveness and creative productivity. A survey examining thousands of founders of innovative companies including the likes of Steve Jobs and Jeff Besos, found that the key distinguishing factor between innovators from non innovators was curiosity.
These people had a knack for discovery skills where they observed, questioned, and networked with people from diverse backgrounds.
Staying curious is instrumental in finding answers and drawing connections between things that would normally be dismissed. The same applies to understanding people too.
Imagine if you asked questions and connected the dots between why people think and behave the way they do, rather than being quick to judge them.
